Testing frequency is not set by the province, so the by-law and the notice from your water utility are the documents that govern your property.

Backflow is water flowing the wrong way through a plumbing system, usually when pressure drops in the municipal main or rises on the property side. If the water on your side has been in a boiler, an irrigation line, a chemical feed or a process tank, it can be drawn into the drinking water supply. A backflow preventer is a mechanical assembly of check valves and, on higher hazard devices, a relief valve that stops that. Testing proves each valve still seals under pressure.

What happens if my backflow device fails the test?

You get a written result and a quote to repair or replace the device. Most failures are a check valve or relief valve that can be rebuilt with a repair kit and retested. A cracked body, a device that is no longer approved, or one that is the wrong type for the hazard level needs replacing. Either way the municipality expects the failed device to be corrected and retested within the window set by your by-law.

Most single-family homes on municipal water do not need a testable device, though a lawn irrigation system, a boiler with chemical treatment or a fire sprinkler system can trigger one.
